My Favorite Graduation Speech

This post is a change of pace from what I normally write on this blog. In class that I am writing this blog for, my teacher is constantly showing us his favorite commercials, Ted Talks, and graduation speeches. Regardless of the type of video, they are almost always inspirational, informative, and thought provoking. One video that he showed was of a man explaining to teenage students that despite what people have told them up to this point in their lives about how old they should be when they graduate, get jobs, and get married, these “directions” should not apply to them. He explained to the students that everyone should be on their own timeline and find what makes them happy on their own time. He cited some famous people who didn’t realize their passion or make their fortune until they were much older.
One specific person that he talked about was J.K. Rowling. This got me excited because everyone knows I’m a huge Harry Potter nerd. As embarrassing as it is, I decided to forego a spring break trip to Cancun with my friends to go to Harry Potter World with my dad. Anyway, the video reminded me about a graduation speech that I watched that J.K. Rowling gave at Harvard in 2008. Even though I will argue with anyone ever that Harry Potter is the best story written, J.K. Rowling’s life story makes me love the series even more. Most people only think of her as an extremely wealthy, successful author who has everything in the world. However, most people don’t realize that she had an extremely difficult life before her books were published. For those that don’t know I don’t want to spoil her story, but it is without a doubt one of the most inspirational I have ever heard. I have attached the link of her speech below, so if you want to learn more about the woman behind the Harry Potter series or just want to hear how a woman was able to turn her life around despite the odds being stacked against her, please watch this speech.
